Daphne came to us with a jewelry set from her mother with three different pieces featuring ruby and sapphire stones. The set had a ring, a bracelet, and a pair of earrings. Daphne loved the set — and that it was from her mother — but she wasn’t a fan of the earrings, which she felt were too heavy and that the design was a bit too outdated for her taste.
Daphne wanted us to redesign the earrings so that they would still go with the rest of the set, which she wanted to keep intact, but make them lighter, more updated, and more in line with her own style.
initial sketches
In order to create a new design for the earrings that would match with the already existing bracelet and ring from the set, we needed to study the style and form of the existing jewelry so we could use similar features and stones on our newly redesigned pieces. We noticed that there were wavy details on the bracelet and a knot detail on the ring.
In order to make sure that the new earring design would align with the existing pieces, we provided her with two concept ideas and three sketches.
Sketches, A/B direction
Daphne really loved the wavy design idea. With this design element set, we needed her to make a choice between two different lengths of waves on the designs and which direction the waves will go in — especially important because, as a set of earrings, there will be a mirrored pair.
Custom Fitting
We asked Daphne to send us a few photos of her ears so we can measure her ear size and shape so we can be certain that the custom earrings fit perfectly. We love doing this as it’s these special, one-size-fits-only-you touches that is the beauty of custom-made jewelry. With these photos, ,we were able to build the perfect pair of earrings that would perfectly fit her ear shape and size.
Knowing the exact shape and size of her ears also helped us to set the different stones in the earrings, the oval-shaped emeralds, the round diamonds, the square rubies and the square sapphires.
Rhino modeling
Rhino modeling was essential to the process in making sure that all of these stones, and different kinds of stones, fit perfectly within the shape of the earring. Not only was it important that the stones fit, it was also important that the stones looked good in the design we had made for them! We had to make sure all the stones fit into the right places.
Casting
Once our Rhino imagery was all set, we were ready to get our casting and set the stones! With so many small stones involved in the creation of this pair of earrings, we loved how complex this casting looked and couldn’t wait to see the final piece and get them onto Daphne’s ears and worn with her set.
Redesign images on ear and with the rest of the set
We were so happy that these earrings turned out perfect and just for Daphne. She couldn’t be happier because of how light they were, how they fit perfectly on her ear, and how they fit perfectly into her mother’s set. She can’t wait to wear the earrings along with all the other pieces or all by themselves!
