EWELRY REDESIGN STORY #81: A Gift for My Daughter

December 17, 2024

Before and After

THE REDESIGN CHALLENGE:

Sandy approached us with two cherished rings. One was a family heirloom he inherited from his parents, featuring multiple baguette diamonds surrounding a stunning center emerald diamond, all set in a substantial 14k white gold band. This piece provided an abundance of material for his redesign project. The second ring was his wife’s yellow gold piece, adorned with a pear-shaped stone. Sandy’s vision was to craft a new ring for her by combining the heirloom’s center emerald with the pear-shaped stone. (Stay tuned for that story in our next edition!)

Additionally, from the chunky diamond ring, we had 30 baguette diamonds of varying dimensions. Sandy’s plan included creating several pairs of earrings—gifts for his daughter and cousins. He shared some design ideas that he had in mind.

THE REDESIGN CONCEPT:

Diamond layouts

During our consultations, Sandy emphasized a geometric approach for the earring designs, which was ideal given the shape of the baguette diamonds. We ultimately settled on creating two distinct designs. Two pairs would feature two larger baguette diamonds, while the other two would showcase three smaller ones. In total, we crafted two pairs of each design, resulting in four pairs of earrings altogether.

The final designs were modern, contemporary, and delicate, just as Sandy envisioned. We chose a half-bezel setting for the baguette diamonds, providing both strength and elegance while maintaining a lighter aesthetic compared to a full-bezel setting.

THE REDESIGN PROCESS:

 Rhino modeling

In the Rhino modeling phase, we took great care to ensure that we used the appropriate sizes for the baguette diamonds, as they varied in dimensions. I focused on shaping the half-bezel to be robust enough to hold the stones securely while remaining visually delicate.

Casting

Once the castings were completed, the vision for the earrings truly came to life. Given the chunkiness of the white gold heirloom ring—which had an abundance of diamonds—we were able to deduct the final cost from the existing gold. We also had leftover baguette diamonds, which I returned to Sandy during our final meeting.

THE REDESIGN REVEAL:

New earrings on ears

When the four pairs of earrings were finished, we presented them to Sandy in a meeting that included his baby daughter. He was overjoyed at the thought of her wearing a pair of these earrings as she grew older. These earrings also served as thoughtful gifts for his cousins, and he could already picture the smiles on their faces as they received such meaningful tokens of love, reimagined from their family heirloom jewelry.
