The dusty necklace, family heirloom or impulse jewelry piece that sits in a drawer. Seohee Koh wants to give those pieces a new life with the launch of her second brand Studio Remod. The Bring Your Own Jewelry (BYOJ) concept allows customers to co-create with her to develop a one-of-a-kind, artfully created treasure.
Koh’s experience in the jewelry industry spans over a decade including a career at Tiffany & Co, Van Cleef and Arpels, along with private clients that led her to start her own fine and custom brand S/H KOH in 2015 that focuses on 20th century art and architecture. Even with a focus on this brand, she knew there was a bigger opportunity after consistent requests for custom and redesign services.
The goal is to make the process simple. To get started, clients upload a photo of their jewelry and a photo of what they want. This leads to a consultation to learn about design options. From here, clients mail in their old jewelry and will receive 3 design sketches along with estimated prices.
For Koh, the end results is always rewarding when they both see a new product. It truly becomes a marriage in finding a way to balance their design needs and putting her aesthetic forward to guide them properly.
As a designer, your aesthetic in everything that’s involved around any type of design. Especially as a jewelry designer, even when I’m listening to the customer’s design and material preferences, it’s my job to lead them to the right direction with a strong aesthetic.
From a business standpoint, this model made sense due to a consumer demand for online custom services, potential consumer reach and technology resources available.
