JEWELRY REDESIGN STORY #87: A Ring Filled With Family, Memory, and Gold

Before and After

THE REDESIGN CHALLENGE:

Priya came to us with a collection of inherited jewelry pieces, many of them crafted in high-karat gold. Being of Indian descent, she grew up surrounded by the beauty and richness of high-karat yellow gold jewelry, which holds deep cultural and sentimental value in Indian families. Among the pieces she inherited were several 22k yellow gold jewelry items from her family, along with an approximately 9-carat rectangular-cut yellow topaz.

THE REDESIGN CONCEPT:

She wanted to transform these meaningful heirlooms into a special signet ring for her brother’s 30th birthday. Her vision was to create a bold yet elegant ring that beautifully showcased the warmth of rich yellow gold while reusing her inherited 22k gold and the large yellow topaz. She also wanted to incorporate an “S” motif with flush-set diamonds to represent Superman, since her brother is a huge Superman fan. On the back of the ring, we engraved the letter “C” as a personal touch for his initials.

For the overall finish, Priya didn’t want the ring to feel overly polished or perfect. Instead, she envisioned something more organic and natural, so we decided to add a subtle hammered texture throughout the surface. Because the yellow topaz was quite large, we also opened up the front of the ring beneath the stone to visually lighten the piece while adding additional design detail and dimension.

THE REDESIGN PROCESS:

While working on the Rhino CAD, one of the biggest challenges was carefully calculating the gold weight, since Priya specifically wanted to reuse as much of her inherited gold as possible. In the end, we needed to add a small amount of additional 22k yellow gold to complete the ring properly. Fortunately, we were able to sell some of her unused jewelry pieces to help offset that cost.

Casting

When the casting came back, the color was absolutely stunning — such a rich, beautiful yellow. That was truly the moment of truth: whether the large yellow topaz would fit perfectly and whether the entire piece would come together successfully. Since we don’t often work with 22k gold, the shrinkage and behavior during casting can differ significantly from the 14k and 18k alloys I typically work with. I was honestly nervous and hoping everything would work out smoothly.

THE REDESIGN REVEAL:

Thankfully, with the incredible craftsmanship of my jeweler, we created something truly special. The moment I saw the finished ring, it honestly took my breath away. The color, the texture, the proportions — everything felt so natural, substantial, and beautifully warm.

I couldn’t wait for Priya’s brother to see it. Although his 30th birthday had already passed, she was so excited to finally present the ring to him. What made it even more meaningful was that she wanted to gift it in front of her parents, since these heirloom pieces originally came from them. She wanted them to see how their jewelry had been transformed into something new for the next generation and to receive their blessing as well.

The timing worked out perfectly during a Mother’s Day family gathering, where she presented the ring to both her brother and parents. Her entire family loved it. Later, Priya messaged me to tell me how emotional and happy everyone was during the moment, and hearing her story made me incredibly happy too.

Experiences like this are exactly why I love creating custom jewelry. It’s not just about designing beautiful pieces — it’s about the emotional connection, the family history, and the trust clients share with you. You become part of their story. Moments like these remind me that jewelry can carry memories, relationships, and love across generations, and that connection means so much more than simply creating another product.

I also created another ring for Priya, and I can’t wait to share that story next.
