JEWELRY REDESIGN STORY #84: The Engagement Ring
THE REDESIGN CHALLENGE:
Joshi is one of our valued returning clients, and this project was especially meaningful. There is something truly special about working with a client over time—when they return, it reflects a deep level of trust. That relationship alone makes each new piece even more personal and significant. In one of her initial emails, she wrote, “Your work is truly always with me, because every time I wear a piece you redesigned, I think of you.”
This time, she came to us with something incredibly important—her engagement ring. Knowing the significance of this piece, I felt both honored and excited to work on it with her.
THE REDESIGN CONCEPT:
Sketches
Joshi came in with a clear design direction: an organic-feeling diamond cluster that combined prong and flush settings, with a wide range of diamond sizes to create a natural, flowing composition. However, since we were working with her existing diamonds, we needed to thoughtfully adapt the design to the available sizes. This meant refining and evolving the concept while staying true to her original vision.
We explored several iterations together, going through multiple rounds of design. In the end, we arrived at a solution that closely reflected her initial idea while working beautifully with the stones she had. Even after selecting the direction, we continued to fine-tune the diamond cluster, carefully studying balance, spacing, and proportion.
THE REDESIGN PROCESS:
Rhino modeling
Once the design was finalized, I developed several CAD variations in Rhino to show subtle differences in the cluster arrangement. The complexity of the piece required careful attention to both structure and composition. Together, we selected the final version—one that felt modern, organic, and effortlessly beautiful, without appearing too symmetrical or overly structured.
Casting
We then progressed to the casting stage. While the initial result was promising, the true transformation reveals itself once the diamonds are set and the piece is fully assembled. In the end, everything came together beautifully, resulting in a refined and exquisite ring.
