JEWELRY REDESIGN STORY #78: The Perfect Cluster Ring

December 17, 2024

Before and After

THE REDESIGN CHALLENGE:

Sarah had a special treasure: a few beautiful rings inherited from her parents, who had brought them back from their travels in India. As she embarked on a new chapter of her life with her fiancé, Kyle, he wanted to create a truly unique engagement ring for her.

Initially, Sarah brought us a striking rectangular blue sapphire ring and a bold diamond band. However, she quickly realized that the sapphire's depth was not comfortable for everyday wear. After collaborating on some sketches, she was excited about the design possibilities.

But then, Sarah decided to incorporate a different ring—one featuring a chunky diamond design with several large diamonds. This led us to the idea of using the center diamond from that ring as the focal point for her new engagement ring, envisioning a stunning diamond cluster design.

Final Sketches

With the constraint of using Sarah's diamonds, we faced a few limitations when creating the clusters. Our first two designs didn’t quite capture the beauty of the diamonds she had. So, I invited Sarah and Kyle to meet at a local coffee shop to finalize the design. Together, we explored various center-focused diamond cluster ring concepts until we found the one that made Sarah's eyes light up.

THE REDESIGN PROCESS:

 Rhino modeling

To bring our vision to life, we relied on Rhino CAD software, which played a crucial role in ensuring the correct diamond sizes for the cluster ring. With the dimensions set, we felt confident that her ring would come out beautifully.

Casting

The casting process went flawlessly, and we carefully chose the diamonds from Sarah's old rings to create this stunning piece. Additionally we were able to sell Sarah's old gold, which helped to reduce the overall cost of the final design.

Finally, the moment arrived! I reached out to Kyle to let him know that the ring was ready for its big reveal. The finished cluster ring was exquisite, perfectly reflecting their love and connection. Kyle proposed to Sarah amidst the breathtaking beauty of upstate New York, and she was overjoyed with her one-of-a-kind cluster ring.
