Caitlin was at a point in her life where she had a lot to celebrate: She was approaching her 10th wedding anniversary and was about to welcome the birth of a new baby. Thinking that she could celebrate these milestones with some beautiful pieces of jewelry, Caitlin came to us with a few family diamond rings that she had been holding on to for a while in the hopes that they could be redesigned into some new pieces, one for her and one for her new baby.
Caitlin wanted a new pair of stud earrings for herself and a diamond pendant for her baby daughter who would soon be born. For both the pendant for her daughter and the stud earrings for herself, Caitlin wanted jewelry that would be delicate, wearable, and modern.
Sketches
We had so many diamonds to work with -- and two pieces to design for -- so we spent quite a bit of time on this project in the sketching and conception phase.
For the pendant for Caitlin’s soon-to-be-born daughter, we tried some different designs for two different design ideas: one that featured a bird-like pendant and the other that was a representation of the arrow, the sign for Sagittarius that her daughter would be born under.
For the stud earrings, we played around with different kinds of clusters and bars featuring a number of the diamonds from the ones Caitlin originally brought to us from her family jewelry.
Final sketches
After careful consideration and lots of tweaking, Caitline decided that she wanted to focus on the Sagittarius sign for her daughter’s pendant and a linear cluster for her own diamond stud earrings.
The color gold was also something that Caitlin found very important and she decided to have her daughter’s pendant designed in 18k rose gold and her own stud earrings designed in 14k yellow gold.
Rhino modeling
When working with so many different stones, especially stones of slightly different sizes, it’s important to make a very precise CAD model so that each stone has its place and that it fits perfectly in that place. Each differently-sized diamond got its own color in our CAD model so that we wouldn’t get confused when making our design model.
Casting
With the diamonds’ places set in the CAD we were ready to cast.
Redesign images
We loved the way that these two pieces came out and are thrilled that Caitlin will be able to have a new piece of jewelry for both herself and her daughter and that she can say she was a big part in the redesign that made these pieces so special and so celebratory.
