Bryce and his boyfriend have been together for seven-and-a-half years since they met in college. With their eighth anniversary on the horizon, they started talking about the next step in their lives: engagement!
Bryce and his boyfriend wanted to do things a little differently. After they mutually decided that they wanted to get married, they decided that they were each going to select their own engagement rings for themselves so they could be certain they would love this ever-important piece of jewelry that they would wear every day and would represent their love, relationship, and lifelong commitment.
Bryce knew that he wanted to embrace his culture with his engagement ring. His mother, who is of Thai descent, had inherited some ornate Thai-style sapphire and diamond ring from her own mother before passing on the jewelry to Bryce. Bryce knew that he wanted to incorporate these stones into his engagement ring in a design that would be both modern and contemporary while still nodding to the ornate style of the Thai jewelry of his ancestors.
Sketches
We knew that Bryce’s aesthetic was modern, clean, and simple so we created some sketches for him that would feature the diamonds and sapphires from his mother’s jewelry that weren’t quite as intricate in their design as the original pieces of Thai jewelry but still had some detailing around the band that would remind Bryce of his heritage.
To do this, we designed a ring that would set small side diamonds in a cutdown setting that would create a subtle and delicate detailing surrounding the center single sapphire. The center sapphire would be set in a clean and simple bezel setting. To finish it off, we planned to add a satin finish to the ring to give it extra romantic characteristics.
Rhino modeling
The Rhino CAD model was an important step to make sure the new jewelry would have all the right dimensions in order to set all the stones available to us from Bryce’s mother’s jewelry.
Casting
We were then ready to cast the ring. Once the cast was set, we knew all the setting sizes would fit perfectly with the stones and we were ready to set and finalize Bryce’s redesigned engagement ring.

The finished ring was so gorgeous and just as modern as Bryce wanted. He loved that the ring was something that was so special to him and featured the stones and some design elements of his family history but that still suited a ring style that he would like to wear forever.
When the actual proposal happened, Bryce and his boyfriend had a calm night in. They cooked the same meal together that they made on their first trip together seven years ago. After that, Bryce proposed at Riverside Park right by their house. They loved looking out at the beautiful Hudson and Bryce was thrilled to wear a ring he loved, as beautiful as the view of the river, with the man that he loves and can’t wait to marry.
Happy engagement!
