Jewelry Redesign Story #48: A Stack of Gifts For His Wife
THE REDESIGN CHALLENGE:
David wanted to make an anniversary and birthday gift for his wife. She had two stackable rings that went around her engagement ring although David wanted to upgrade them with our clean and modern aesthetic that would create an oval shape around her engagement ring when all worn together. David loved the idea that one gift of two rings could celebrate both their anniversary and her birthday.
THE REDESIGN PROCESS:
initial sketches
When designing rings that stack around an existing ring, it was important to have a strong understanding of the existing piece both visually and physically so that the new rings would fit aesthetically and spatially.
We created some sketches for David that featured sharp clean edges that would make smooth visual lines around David’s wife’s existing engagement ring. David was thrilled with how polished and contemporary the new design looked compared to the older, chunkier rings that his wife had worn.
Rhino modeling
The Rhino model was especially important to make sure that we had adequately planned for the space and curves around the existing engagement ring. We also added a simple engraving, per David’s request, into the band of one of the new rings.
Casting
With David’s approval, we were ready to cast the ring. Once we had confirmed that the prongs that would hold the round diamonds were ready to go we were ready to finalize the rings.
THE REDESIGN REVEAL:
The finished jewelry
David and his wife were thrilled with how these two stackable rings turned out. They loved how the rings fit perfectly around David’s wife’s existing engagement ring but also that they were able to be worn on their own, separately or together, as well as the option to wear them neatly stacking or with the open space in the middle. With so many options, it was like receiving so many new rings all at once.
