Before and After

THE REDESIGN CHALLENGE:

Kevin’s fianceé, Franny, had been holding on to a diamond ring from her grandmother for some years and always wanted to do something special to make the ring her own engagement ring. After discussing their future together, Franny gave the ring to her fianceé, Kevin, who was put in charge of the ring redesign. Kevin wanted to help make Franny’s dreams of an engagement ring that she loved with the diamonds from her grandmother into a reality.

THE REDESIGN CONCEPT:

Sketches

Franny knew she wanted a ring that was both delicate and feminine. To achieve the feminine quality she was looking for, Franny requested that we design some twisted rope detailing on the shank of the ring to create the graceful and delicate style that she always dreamed of for her engagement ring.

Initially, Franny also was interested in having blue sapphires as well as diamonds as side stones on the ring, framing the central diamond pattern. However, after looking over the sketches with the framing sapphires that we created for her, she decided that the ring would be more subtle, yet radiant if it were to feature only diamonds. To maintain the elegant style, we decided to utilize diamonds as the framing feature to the central diamonds.

 Final arrangement

After we had finalized the design for the ring with the side diamonds, we had to find the actual stones that would fit perfectly into the design to frame the central diamonds. We needed to find stones that were the best size and shape for Franny and for this particular ring and design.

Once we had sourced and purchased all of the stones, we were ready to begin drafting and casting.

THE REDESIGN PROCESS:

 Rhino modeling

The Rhino model was a crucial part of this design process where it is essential to avoid mistakes. We had to be certain at this stage that we carefully and correctly used all the dimensions of the various stones in their various correct placements to make sure that everything would come together perfectly when we finally crafted the ring and set the stones.

Casting

When we had double and triple checked our work for each individual stone, we were ready to finalize the CAD and move on to casting and setting the ring.
